Singapore succeeds at EVERYTHING - except DATING

Yes, it's sad but true. Singaporeans succeed at everything - except dating. Well, not that I had to mention it, but last week, the International Herald Tribune reported this on their Asian highlight. True or not? Well, read on for their argument...

Well, apparently, as reported, students from Singapore Poly had a sort of "college mixer", to help the males and females interact to boost chances of them dating. They had assembled for the first class of "Love Relations for Life: A Journey of Romance, Love and Sexuality."

The course, which is in its second year at two polytechnic institutes, is the latest of many, mostly futile, campaigns by the government to get its citizens to mate and multiply. Its popularity last year has led to talk of expansion through the higher education system.

"We want to tell students: Don't wait until you have built up your career, SOMETIMES IT'S TOO LATE, ESPECIALLY FOR THE GIRLS"

Yu-Foo Yee Shoon, minister of state for community development, youth and sports, said at a news conference last month.

The courses are an extension of government matchmaking programs that try to address the twin challenges embodied in a falling birthrate: Too few people are having babies and too few of those who are belong to what Singapore considers the genetically desirable educated elite.

For 25 years, the mating rituals organized by the government - tea dances, wine tasting, cooking classes, cruises, screenings of romantic movies - have been among the country's least-successful social engineering programs.

Last year Singapore's fertility rate fell to a record

low of 1.24 children per woman!

"Some people say if you're a smart guy you should marry a smart woman who can help you with your finances and career," said Chan, whose agency is called Club2040 and who has worked under contract for the Social Development Unit.

eStee Thinks: Definitely, couples should complement each other, but having similar interests may not be the be all and end all of a successful relationship. It takes more work than that. I've seen people who complement each other break up down the road and also have seen couples who seem as different as 2 end of the spectrum last a long time as well. It's not cookie cutter!

Three 20-year-old graduates from last year's inaugural course at Singapore Polytechnic still seemed imbued more with "kiasu" than romance.

Despite everything their teachers had told them about multitasking work and love, none was in a relationship. And nothing they had heard in class seemed to have dented their stereotypes about the opposite sex.

"I'm not open to relationships in school. Boys in school are not my cup of tea. They are male chauvinist pigs. They're annoying and childish. And they won't give in to you. They're just not mature." said Wei Shan Koh, a former student who works as a teacher's aide.

eStee Thinks: Well Weishan, I honestly think you're childish too. I know we all talk about equality and all that but if you aren't able to respect a man or give a man the respect he deserves, then you won't go anywhere. As much as women claim to be equals, we have to accept that men can be better than us in certain areas and likewise. If you want to talk so much about chauvinism, then why don't you go enlist yourself into 2 years into the army then come back and act macho...

"I think girls' ideas are a bit childish, or you might say girlie. It's a matter of pride. Guys are more outspoken. We don't like a girl to be more outspoken." said Tian, who hopes to become an engineer.

eStee Thinks: Darling Tian, if you want a girl who talks less than u, then go marry a Barbie Doll k?

Kamal Prakash, who hopes to be a lecturer in mathematics, gave voice to what appears to be the common theme here, both among young people and their elders.

"I am not interested now in love relations because I want to continue my studies. If I concentrate on love relations, I won't be able to concentrate on my studies."

eStee thinks: Every stage of your life, you'll be busy with something. After this, it'll be work. Are you going to say then that you'll wait until you retire before you start scouting? Hun, multi tasking is good practice now for the future...

Singapore's childbearing age, is one of the lowest in the world and the 28th year in a row it has stayed below the rate of 2.5 children needed to maintain the population. But even a replacement-level rate would not be enough for today's planners. The government recently announced that it was aiming to increase the population by 40 percent over the next half century, to 6.5 million from the current 4.5 million.

"Teaching our youth in school how to fall in love" is a good solution, wrote Andy Ho, a senior writer at The Straits Times, a government-friendly newspaper that does its best to help out in Singapore's many campaigns.

In 1991, for example, when the government began

1) offering cash bonuses to couples with more than two children

2) Newspaper printed tips for having sex in the back seat of a car

3) Directions to some of the "darkest, most secluded and most romantic spots" for parking. It suggested covering the windows with newspapers for privacy.

Singapore is known for its campaigns to get residents to be polite, to smile, to be tidy, to speak proper English and not to chew gum. In 1984, the country's master planner, then-Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, declared that too few of the country's most eligible women - the ones with college degrees - were marrying and having children.

But in Singapore it is impossible to get very far from thoughts of money and the workplace. These guys may have other things on their minds besides romance and babies. :( Thanks to International Tribune for article..

Any bright ideas to help Singaporeans MATE?

Meeting the men from GOOGLE @ Geek Terminal

From left: Bill, Dionis, Me, Meow, Peter, Derek Callow, Audrey, Dickson Seow, Shirley, Nic, Daryl & Wayne

When Mayda from The Hoffman Group called me regarding arranging a meeting between Google and TDM, I was like WOOOOT!

It's not everyday you come face to face with the wonderful people of Google. Well, I mean, it's been some time since TDM arranged meet up, so having the opportunity to be in dialogue with the big guys was a chance we jumped at.

Google is always seen as the money making giant in the valley -- the semi-Godlike company in Mountain View. But hey, coming face to face with them was such a good experience.

I won't be a spoiler and reveal much now, but with 2 new additions, Daryl Tay and Audrey, we set for some good shit ahead!

STAY TUNED!

Nuffnang's Boss Stewie visits the red DOT! (pics)

Boss Stewie from Nuffnang KL office visited Singapore on Thursday and I got the honour of meeting him Friday for lunch with Nicole and Boss Ming. You know how Boss Stewie looks like?? haha this is how...

And can you guess the first thing I said to him when I saw him? haha.. read on...

But seriously, I have been following his blog for a considerable amount of time already and all I see him doing all the time is.. yes smiling. All this shots of him on his blog are of him grinning and flashing his pearly whites. But seriously.. the million dollar question is...

"NO but seriously, does Timothy Tiah ever stop SMILING??"

Thursday was no different. He truly is DARLIE"S newest poster boy...

The moment I met him I said, "Oh my God, you're exactly like what you are on your blog. You can't stop smiling!"

Guess his response :"... *huge smile*"...

OK, so we went to like Ming's favourite restaurant to have like a whole ton of food, yummy man I tell you. But the ma la soup is too hot for me still, really it was literally bubbling red.. I don't know how anyone can stomach that.. it's like drinking a can of chili padi down.. ahhh.. seems like only Ming can drinks it down in gulps...

Then later on after eating our fill, Ming and I sent him off to the airport to catch his flight back to penang! But first of course, at the Airport, we had to stop by Swensens to fill our faces with more cream and sugar and fats!!!

hee hee and this is when we decided to give stewie his pseudo christmas present...!!
(yes Ming is much cheekier than his serious exterior! He makes me laugh so hard it's sometimes not even funny!)

As I noticed, the only time I've seen Boss Stewie without a smile on his face is when... he is EATING!!

See? NO SMILE!!!

But then again, I think he will be very very happy with his Christmas present!

I hope he doesn't itch too much... :)

Disclaimer: No Boss Stewies or Swensens ice cream or darlie toothpaste was hurt in the making of this blog post...

Nuffnang Mini Community Initiative - BLOGWHORE GALORE!

Put a group of bloggers together - WHAM BANG, THANK YOU MA'AM. Out of the bubblin' couldron, you pull out 1001 pics. Thanks to Jayden, I showcase to you what happened last Thursday, at Nuffnang's mini community initiative - the babes and hunks who were privileged to go!

TAADAA! All 8 of us!!! + Jaq, the speaker!

Held at The Sun Tent @ Empress Place Park, the set up was perfect. Not too cluttered, comfy cushions, light air conditioning, dim lights and soft music set the stage for an evening to be remembered.

This mini event was splendid. It wasn't an event for the masses, where cliques hung out -- we actually got to talk to and get to personally know everyone better. Yes, I managed to talk to all 7 of the rest there. :) Very nice and communal!

Yes, I had the same question, "Where in the flying rats' ass is Empress place? Of course, Ming, being the person with a perfect sense of direction, knew immediately where it was, but being female (yes blame the lack of testosterone!), I had to run my fingers up and down the street directory to find out where it was. Thank God I wasn't navigating, if not I think I would have gotten Ming very frustrated with my sense of directions (of lack, thereof)....

Stepping up, we were welcomed to a serene atmosphere, the setting was just puuurrffeeeccttt! (only lacking was the red carpet, but seriously, who am I kidding?!?)

Jaq, the coach, taught us the basics of blogging!

With her, was her Mac, which she named Daniel... Now I'm thinking what I should name my Mac. I want a really handsome name, but nothing too cliche like Brad or Matt or Tom. Any suggestions? I really like the male names like Nathanael, Karl, Josh, Caleb, Ray.... (must be handsome name ah.. not handsome, reject immediately!!)

And as a typical Singaporean, if you don't manage to fill our tummy wummies, you ain't going to satisfy us!

The crowd was just nice, not too many, but not too sparse -- friendly atmosphere of learning through hands on interaction exercises and discussion!

Not forgetting, must have individual shots!!! Thanks to Jayden for the pics!

Jayden with Ylva

Huiwen

Nadia..

Kexin! OMG yes that's really her blogsite address!

Immelia...

Jayden and I... *he so young so handsome oredi hor???*
(of course my darling still more handsome la, must score brownie points!!!)

Of course we wore smiles on our faces! Free event, good food, good company, good learning... what more can a blogger want?

(.... oh yah, of course want more ads and more money, more readership, more shoes, bags, clothes, discounts... the lists goes on... ok let's not even get started...)

Nonetheless THANK YOU BOSS MING AND BOSS STEWIE!

Pimping Zouk's, MOS' and FHM's Mags -singapore shocker-

"Drugs - If you play, you will pay"

Typical FHM Poster? Look again!

That's the new tagline for this year's Anti-Drug Campaign (the website is drool-worthy!), targeted at youths at risk of falling prey to the use of synthetic drugs. Was this campaign a flight or failure to launch?

This 4-month long campaign was launched by the National Council Against Drug Abuse (NCADA) yesterday @ SMU and this initiative aims to grab the attention of youths through street-art and online interactivity. It also marks a refreshing change in strategy - for the first time in a decade, NCADA is doing away with its annual anti-drug TV commercial.

Here, students are using graffiti art to paint on 2 police men escorting a young drug offender away.. a cool twist on the original ad

Students are using graffiti art as a way of adding a "spunk" to the typical anti-drug message. They are taking real ads such as Perlini's silver, MOS' and FHM's and overlaying the images with the stark message, "if you play, you will pay".

This new campaign gets a 2 THUMBS UP from me. We're so used to seeing so many campaigns in Singapore, sometimes, I for sure, brush off another campaign as insignificant and "same old, same old". We've been flooded with so many messages from different campaigns, the speak good English campaign, the courtesy campaign, etc, it's inevitable that when another campaign launches, the messages gets lost in all that noise.

Zouk advertisement being "pimped" up as well, with the NCADA message painted on the t-shirt.

However, I must commend NCADA for a great job this year. Their change in strategy has been definitely well thought out. More often than not, TV commercials are the main medium for spreading campaign messages and they are a must-have in the marketing mix. However, this time around, they are eliminating this medium and concentrating on using the online medium.

A lot of youths are indeed spending a lot of time online, we blog, blog surf, (re)check our emails (every 5 minutes) and spend half our day facebooking (*sheepish look*)... I feel that using the internet as a way to target youths is a fun and fresh thing to do! Who would have thought any national campaign would be so bold as to defy traditional, almost "fail-safe" mediums like TV?

My favourite of the lot -- Perlini Silver's model gets painted on a set of handcuff, hammering home the NCADA message!

The launch of the campaign also caused quite a "BANG". Youths were allowed to be creative as seen in the pictures below, transforming traditional poster advertisements into those that cause us to look twice.

Here's a clip on how a normal looking poster can be pimped up all for a good cause!

All in all, I'd like to say GOOD JOB to NCADA for stepping outside the box and being willing to experiment with novel and creative ways of reaching out to youths. We're a contemporary bunch and the last thing we need are the boring same old messages over and over again in our faces. We all know that drugs are bad, we've been hammered home the message since moral ed lessons in primary school -- we don't need to be lectured, we need to be educated. And educating us, you are -- in a way that catches our attention as well as connecting with us on a personal level.

Well done. I never thought any national campaign would actually wow me -- this is the first (and I hope not the last)!....
